Kathryn Starkey Candidacy |
|
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Kathryn Starkey announces candidacy for Florida House Pasco County School Board member Kathryn Starkey today announced her candidacy for the Florida House of Representatives, District 45 (District map) seat to be vacated by Rep. Tom Anderson in 2010 due to term limits. "I have enjoyed serving Pasco and Pinellas communities in many capacities over the last 17 years. I have worked to strengthen our local economy, beautify our community, and most recently, as a School Board member, to improve our children's futures by improving their education. "I believe that many of the issues on which I have worked the hardest are best addressed by state government and so I want to go to Tallahassee and work on behalf of the people of Pasco and Pinellas Counties to help revitalize our economy, preserve our quality of life, and ensure a high quality education for all of our children." Starkey was elected to the Pasco County School Board
in 2004, and reelected without opposition in 2008.
She was selected by her peers on the School Board to
serve as chair in 2007-2008. Starkey's other public
service includes her appointment by the Pasco County
Commission to both the Citizen Ordinance Review
Committee and the Citizen's Advisory Committee
evaluating the county's comprehensive plan. She was also appointed twice by Governor Jeb Bush as member of the Pinellas-Anclote River Basin Board of the Southwest Florida Water Management District, and by both Governor Bush and Governor Charlie Crist to the state's Greenways and Trails Council. In the education arena, Starkey has served on the Board of Directors of the Florida School Boards Association, as vice-chair of the state's Learning Council, and recently joined the board of the CareerTechEd Foundation, which provides industry assistance to Career Academies in public school. She was also selected as the Florida School Board Member of the Year for large school districts by the Florida Education Foundation Consortium in 2008. A resident of Pinellas County before moving to Pasco County in 1992, Starkey has been actively involved in civic affairs, serving on the board of East Lake Little League, helping found the Gills Family YMCA in Pasco, co-founding Scenic Pasco, serving as President of the West Pasco All-Children's Hospital Guild, and on the Boards of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross, and Wachovia Bank. Kathryn Starkey and her husband, J.B. (Trey) Starkey III, live in West Pasco, where they attend Trinity Presbyterian Church of Seven Springs. They have two adult children, Lindsey and Hunter, and twins Zack and Madi, who attend River Ridge Middle School. More news >> More about Kathryn Starkey >> |
